This Relais & Chateaux property was originally opened in 1970 by the charismatic owner, Carlino, and is now a landmark hotel on the Amalfi Coast. With views of Praiano to the left and Positano to the right, Il San Pietro sits in an enviable position, wrapped around a cliff with its own grotto and private beach.
All the rooms have private terraces looking directly out onto the sea, each with its own distinct theme. It boasts the largest terrace in the area as well as a spa, gym, heated swimming pool, and open kitchen in the Michelin starred restaurant.
A real name on the Amalfi Coast, Il San Pietro is grand and sophisticated without being stuffy. It is outside of Positano but completely self-contained, giving you the option of exploring or staying put.

Rooms
Rooms are large with traditional Vietri tiles on the floor and local paintings and mosaics on the walls. All the rooms have private terraces and direct views of the sea. Traditional yet vibrant, the theme is in keeping with the shades of the landscape, furnished with all the luxuries you would expect from a five-star property. Each room has its own quirk that brings it to life, from the blue and white ceramic pots, the warm glow from the chandeliers or the geometric patterns on the tiled floors.
Location
Il San Pietro is secluded and peaceful while being a mere five minutes’ drive from Positano along the Amalfi Coast. The private beach is 540 steps down the cliff, through the terraced vegetable gardens, or just 45 seconds in the hidden elevator that has been drilled into the rock.
Food and drink
There are two excellent restaurants to choose from at the Il San Pietro. The first is Zass, the Michelin starred restaurant that overlooks the Praiano coast and offers high quality dishes with home-grown seasonal vegetables. The second is Carlino, built into the grotto on the water’s edge. This is a special choice, great for either a gourmet or simple lunch.
Facilities and activities
There’s plenty to keep you busy here, from the tennis courts to the small swimming pool with underwater music, through to the private beach or spa. Enjoy some yoga or Pilates in the open or exercise in the gym under the lemon groves. There is also a 24-hour free shuttle to Positano and back.
