The Jura Hotel

The Jura Hotel

Isle of Jura, The UK

A whitewashed building overlooking Craighouse Bay, The Jura Hotel has a scenic location and a panoramic, ever-changing view toward the mainland. The hotel is situated directly in between the island’s distillery and the ocean, and provides a lively meeting place for guests and locals alike.

The 35 rooms are simply decorated and not spacious, but the hotel as a whole exudes a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Floor-to-ceiling windows in the lounge and restaurant make the most of the views, and the lively character and large selection of whiskies and gins in the public bar make this a friendly place in which to relax.

The restaurant’s menu is creative and seasonal, with dishes changing daily due to the availability of locally-sourced ingredients. Rooms do not have TVs but there is a television lounge with a DVD library downstairs. Please note, due to the hotel’s remote location the Wi-Fi service is patchy.

OUR OPINION:

This is a wonderful place to relax in, a real heart of the community.

Rooms

Each of the 34 rooms is simply decorated in a traditional manner, with tartan-style carpets, curtains or bed throws. Premium rooms have additional space for seating, and their bathrooms have a bath as well as a shower. Most Premium rooms also have a view of the sea. Bedrooms do not have a television, although there is a TV room on the ground floor. Wi-Fi is complimentary throughout the hotel but can be patchy.

Location

The Jura Hotel is located opposite the Jura Distillery in Craighouse, the island’s largest settlement. The village is on the southeast of Jura and is accessed by the island’s only road. The hotel is backed by mountains and overlooks the bay, facing toward the mainland. Around 100 m from the hotel is a small community-run shop and post office.

Food and drink

Dining at The Jura Hotel is a real treat, as the chef uses ingredients sourced from the surrounding mountains and ocean such as wild Jura venison, fresh langoustine, Islay crab and Ardfin pheasant. Tables for guests are reserved in the dining room, but more casual fare is also on offer in the lounge bar and pub, which is also open to non-residents.
