Hotel Valverde

Lisbon, Portugal

Exquisitely eclectic in its design, the Valverde Hotel is a charming boutique option located halfway up the Avenida Liberdade in central Lisbon. With just 25 rooms and character to spare the Valverde brings together a wonderful collection of art, fabrics, prints and retro style to create a space that is a real treat for the senses.

Entering the dark, paneled lobby feels more like arriving into a grand townhouse than a hotel and as you explore further it becomes apparent how the mixture of styles, textures and tones have been so carefully balanced. The attention to detail is superb and each of the rooms has its own individual style in the same exuberant vein as the rest of the property. All feature plenty of modern comforts alongside retro furniture and modern design pieces.

The ground floor of the property is given over to the innovative Sítio restaurant which has an almost industrial feel with high ceilings, wide windows and exposed pipes which are softened with elegant furnishings. Seating from the restaurant extends out into an enclosed courtyard filled with ferns. The courtyard also has an inviting outdoor pool, while there's a small gym in the basement and a small reading room with a projector if you’d like to watch a movie.

OUR OPINION:

Achingly cool, we love the decor and style of the Valverde and find the central courtyard terrace to be a wonderfully calming retreat in the heart of the city.

Rooms

Each room at the Valverde has been carefully and uniquely styled to show off its own individual character. Huge attention to detail has been employed to create a seamless blend of retro and modern designs and each room displays a varied range of tones and textures. A number of the smaller rooms have their own balconies, while the Deluxe rooms and above offer views out over the Avenida da Liberdade. The large top-floor Valverde Suite also features views across the rooftops to the Castelo de São Jorge. The modern bathrooms are well-equipped and styled in black marble or bright white tiles. All rooms have air conditioning and free, high-speed internet access.

Location

Situated in the heart of Lisbon’s Avenida da Liberdade, the Valverde Hotel is surrounded by some of the city’s best luxury shopping with a number of high-end boutiques right on the doorstep. The Baixa district is also an easy 15-minute stroll away, while the Chiado and Alfama areas can also be accessed on foot in around 25 minutes.

Food and drink

Breakfast is served each morning in the ground-floor restaurant whose tables extend out onto the terrace. Primarily based around a cold buffet, hot dishes are also available on an à la carte basis. The restaurant, Sítio Valverde, serves lunch, afternoon tea and dinner with a menu based around classic Portuguese specialities, while a lighter outdoor dining menu is available in the terrace courtyard. In the evening the bar serves a selection of signature cocktails.

Facilities and activities

Unusually for a city hotel, the Valverde offers a tranquil enclosed courtyard terrace with a small pool that is ideal for cooling off after a day of sightseeing. The secluded leafy patio is also a peaceful spot to relax. There is also a small gym in the basement and a reading room with a projector if you’d like to watch a movie.
