Bauer Il Palazzo

Bauer Il Palazzo

Venice, Italy

With its spacious terrace overlooking the entrance to the Grand Canal, the Bauer Il Palazzo is located just steps from St Mark’s Square.

The building is a beautifully ornate 17th-century palazzo (palace), which was extended in dramatic Modernist style in the 1940s, the highlight of which is the grandiose lobby complete with Art Deco chandeliers, chrome and brass fittings, and polished marble. The hotel’s exclusive rooftop terrace boasts views out across to Giudecca in the Venetian Lagoon and St Mark’s Basin beyond.

OUR OPINION:

The Bauer Il Palazzo is an ideal choice for those looking for a luxurious Grand Canal front property with plenty of character. We particularly like the spacious terrace which is one of the best spots in the city for relaxing with a quiet drink overlooking the water.

Rooms

Rooms offer elegant design touches, from classic Venetian brocades to more Mussolini-esque Art Deco features. Many rooms are equipped with walk-in closets and all feature electronic safes, flat-screen TVs, and Wi-Fi access. The marble bathrooms are spacious with a good sized bathtub. Double rooms are in the European twin style (with two mattresses on the same bedframe). Many rooms in the 1940s part of the building have views over the Rio di San Moisé and are more spacious than in the 17th-century palazzo section. The rooms at the front of the building look out across the entrance to the Grand Canal, the tip of Dorsoduro, and Giudecca Island.

Location

With two water entrances just off the Grand Canal, the Bauer Il Palazzo is easily accessible by water taxi and well located for exploring the heart of Venice on foot. St Mark’s Square is just around the corner, while the Rialto Bridge is a 15-minute walk away. The Rio di San Moisé, a narrow, gondola thronged canal, runs alongside the terrace. The main lobby opens out into a small square of designer shops and the Baroque façade of San Moisé Church.

Food and drink

Breakfast is served in a selection of small dining rooms on the palazzo side of the hotel. In warmer weather, the doors are opened and guests can sit on the large terrace overlooking the water. There's an extensive buffet selection with fresh fruit, yogurt, cold meats and cheeses, pastries and a small selection of hot options.

During the day, an à la carte lunch and dinner menu is served in the dining rooms and on the terrace. Light snacks are available in the bar area.

For guests in the higher room categories, breakfast is served on the seventh floor roof terrace restaurant, Settimo Cielo, which has views across St Mark’s Basin.

Families

A number of rooms interconnect either directly or with a shared entrance off the main corridor, making them a good choice for families.

Facilities and activities

Spa treatments are available at the hotel’s sister property, the Bauer Palladio on Giudecca Island, which is accessed by the Bauer shuttle, a private boat owned by the hotel and offered exclusively for guest use.
