Old Ground Hotel, Ennis

Old Ground Hotel

Limerick, Ireland

Starting life as an 18th-century manor house, the Old Ground Hotel is centrally located, right in the heart of Ennis. This attractive, vine-covered property has a notable history with connections to past political intrigue.

Owned by a private art collector, the Old Ground Hotel has a rich collection of both modern and classical art. This is displayed throughout the corridors, warm and inviting lounges, and the contemporary bistro, stately restaurant and traditional bar.

The elegant rooms here, adorned with a palette of pleasant blues, cream and gold, are spacious, chic and contemporary in style with dark wooden furniture and rich fabrics. Some higher category rooms offer a bird’s eye view of the cathedral or the vibrant streets of Ennis.

OUR OPINION:

A well-located property with beautiful artwork lining the corridors, we love the Old Ground Hotel for its lively local atmosphere in the Poet’s Corner Bar.

Some higher category rooms feature imposing wooden beams and offer sweeping views over the narrow, winding streets of Ennis. All rooms have a shower over the bath, except the one disabled-accessible room which has a walk-in shower. The rooms also feature complimentary Wi-Fi and televisions with international coverage.

Location

The Old Ground Hotel is centrally located right in the heart of Ennis on a narrow street lined with brightly-painted shops. Close to many pubs renowned for their traditional music and the fast-flowing River Fergus, it makes a good base for exploring the dramatic scenery of County Clare or for taking a trip to Georgian Limerick.

Food and drink

The hotel has two restaurants, the contemporary Town Hall Bistro which serves a creative, modern menu, and the more formal Brendan O’Regan Restaurant which features traditional fare with a contemporary twist. Both are well regarded locally and open all day. Decorated with dark wooden paneling and portraits of local landowners, the Poet’s Corner Bar is a vibrant spot popular with Ennis locals and offers live music in the summer (every day except Monday).

Facilities and activities

A garden is situated in the front of the hotel and provides a pleasant place to sit in the summer.
