Cahernane House, Killarney

Cahernane House

Killarney, Ireland

A long, sweeping driveway leads to Cahernane House Hotel, a striking Victorian country manor swathed with creeping vines. The estate abuts Killarney National Park and offers views of a vast expanse of green set against a backdrop of the McGillycuddy’s Reeks, Ireland's highest mountains.

Inside, the hotel oozes period charm with an impressively grand entrance, high ceilings, antique furniture and traditional taxidermy. Guest rooms are decorated in similar style with subtle florals, beautiful woodwork and elegant curtains. Formal dining is available in the Herbert Restaurant or you can choose more casual fare in the atmospheric wine cellar beneath the hotel.

The hotel is a ten-minute walk from the heart of Killarney, or just a five-minute drive.

OUR OPINION:

A unique property with a sense of historic grandeur, we love the elegant, period-styled guest rooms, vaulted wine cellar and the fantastic views across the gardens to the mountains.

Rooms

Rooms are divided between the main house and the newer Garden Wing but all are individually decorated in period style and have just as much charm and character as the rest of the hotel. Each one has individual touches that makes it unique, but throughout, the past is recalled while contemporary comfort is still provided. Expect Victorian floral patterns, antique furnishings and period-style artwork. Rooms offer outstanding views of the surrounding countryside and those in the Garden Wing have private patios or balconies. Many of the rooms feature claw baths, a Jacuzzi or separate showers.

Location

The hotel’s enviable location affords it both unparalleled views of the surrounding national park and close proximity to the heart of Killarney. With its own gardens extending out into Killarney National Park, it's easy to explore the expansive countryside, while the activity of the town can be reached in five minutes by car.

Food and drink

The manor's original wine cellar below the hotel has been converted into the atmospheric Cellar Bar and is a delightful place to sample the large selection of whiskey, craft gin and local beers on offer. With its weathered walls, stone slab floors and vaulted ceilings, it is also a delightful place to dine and serves snacks, light meals and casual dinners. A more formal menu of seasonal local fare is served in the Herbert Restaurant, which acknowledges the stylish and elegant history of the family for which it is named.

Facilities and activities

Cahernane House Hotel has fishing rights on the River Flesk, which has excellent salmon and trout fishing and flows directly behind the property. The hotel will be glad to arrange for you to go out fishing on the river in a private boat and also offers trips with a private ghillie (fishing guide) on the Killarney lakes.
