Providence Guest House

Kangaroo Island, Australia

Enjoying an idyllic location overlooking Smith Bay, on Kangaroo Island’s north coast, Providence Guest House is an intimate and stylish B&B sitting within lush native gardens that teem with wildlife. You’ll stay in one of just three spacious rooms within a Tuscan-inspired whitewashed villa. Each has its own character and private outdoor space, whether on a balcony overlooking the surrounding countryside or a paved veranda facing the ocean. All have en suite bathrooms, and one has its own open-air hot tub.

Your host will provide a cooked or continental breakfast each morning, as well as dinner if arranged in advance, with dishes using fresh local product from the island wherever possible. They’ll also share insiders’ recommendations on how to make the most of your time on the island, and encourage you to explore the grounds before breakfast for a chance to see kangaroos and other wildlife before they retreat from the heat. They’re also happy to take you out after dark to see nocturnal species that make the garden home.

OUR OPINION:

Not only do we love the ocean views here, but it has a real home-from-home feel thanks to the generous hosts. Native wildlife roams the grounds, and you’re well placed for exploring the island’s highlights.

Rooms

The well-appointed suites in the main villa enjoy the warm light of the sunrise and sunset. The Spa Room and Courtyard Room downstairs open out onto a paved veranda with sweeping views of Smith Bay, and the former has an outdoor hot tub that makes the most of these vistas. Upstairs, the French windows of the Balcony Room lead to a private balcony with views over the surrounding countryside, perfect for night-time wildlife watching.

All rooms are en suite and sleep two guests, although a third bed can be added to the Courtyard Room.

Location

The villa is within strolling distance of Smith Bay’s beach, surrounded by farmland and sitting in a southern European garden in keeping with the villa’s style. You’re well placed for exploring the island’s renowned wildlife and native flora while still just a 15-minute drive from Kingscote Airport or 50 minutes from Kangaroo Island’s ferry terminal.

Food and drink

  • Homemade breakfast served in the courtyard each morning — choose bacon and eggs or continental-style croissants, fruit juice, and gourmet freshly baked muffins.
  • Dinner with wine can be arranged in advance and uses locally sourced ingredients.

Twelve thousand years ago Kangaroo Island was part of mainland Australia. The Ice Age and low sea levels allowed the Island to be populated with an amazing array of wildlife. Kangaroo Island’s plants and animals are now isolated and are clearly different from their mainland relatives.
