U Sathorn Bangkok

U Sathorn Bangkok

Bangkok, Thailand

Located in a quiet neighbourhood in Bangkok's Sathorn business district, U Sathorn provides an escape from the skyscrapers and crowds of the city. The hotel is designed in a French colonial style and has a great sense of space with a stately drive leading to the entrance, an open courtyard at its heart and wide corridors winding through the buildings.

The hotel's 86 comfortable rooms are set in three low-rise wings that face onto the hotel courtyard which is lined with trees which surround a large outdoor swimming pool. The highlight of the hotel though, is the restaurant, a gourmet affair serving some of Bangkok's finest French cuisine. Menus are designed by Jean-Michel Lorain, a French chef who holds three Michelin stars, and reflect his superb attention to detail. A small café also offers snacks, afternoon tea and drinks.

In addition to the pool, the hotel has a gym and provides complimentary bicycles. Lumphini Park, Bangkok's largest inner-city park, is a short ride away, while a complimentary shuttle runs to the nearest BTS Skytrain station. As part of the U Hotel & Resorts Group, guests have use of their rooms for 24 hours from the time of arrival and can have breakfast 'whenever and wherever'.

OUR OPINION:

The U Sathorn acts as a wonderful retreat from the noise and chaos of the city. We love its French fine-dining restaurant but if it's not to your taste then the nearby Thai restaurants Issaya Siamese Club and Baan Khanitha offer a good alternative.

Rooms

The rooms are designed to resemble those in a French country mansion with pale linens and muted tones, classically elegant furnishings and large windows that open out onto a terrace or balcony. An array of empty white picture frames acts as a feature wall. The bathrooms are modern but compact and all rooms have air conditioning and complimentary Wi-Fi.

Location

The hotel is set in a tranquil part of Bangkok's business district away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The area has a good selection of traditional restaurants but the main city sights such as the Grand Palace and Wat Pho are about a 20-minute taxi ride away. The nearest BTS Skytrain station is a 15- to 20-minute walk away but the hotel offers a complimentary shuttle every hour.

Food and drink

Diners come from across the city to eat at J'aime Restaurant, its menu devised by Jean-Michel Lorain who holds three Michelin stars. The menu is classically French but the gourmet dishes are served in typical Asian style as sharing plates. Expect haute cuisine of the highest calibre, immaculate presentation and faultless service. For more casual dining, the Library Bar serves a selection of simpler Asian and international dishes as well as afternoon tea.

Facilities and activities

The hotel's pool sits at the heart of the accommodation blocks and is surrounded by sun loungers. There's also a small children's pool, a well-equipped gym, a spa and complimentary hotel bikes for guest use should you wish to explore the local area.
