Itinerary idea in detail

Includes international flights from a choice of UK airports, including London, Birmingham, Manchester, Newcastle, Edinburgh and Glasgow.

  • Today you begin your journey by boarding your international outbound flight to Negombo.

  • On arrival in Colombo, you'll be met by your private chauffeur guide, who will drive you north to Wilpattu National Park.

  • Explore the park this morning on your first game drive, with a local naturalist. Wilpattu has a healthy leopard population, lots of birds and many other mammals. Relax this afternoon or plan a local activity from your lodge: borrow a bicycle, walk the bird trail or join an after-dark walk to try and see the elusive loris.

  • Travel to Sigiriya today. Check into your hotel for the next three nights and enjoy some leisure time.

  • A day off from wildlife today. Make the most of cooler morning temperatures to climb Sigiriya Rock; the panoramic views are worth it. Later, your chauffeur-guide will show you around the ancient city of Polonnaruwa.

  • Today you'll head into either Minneriya or Kaudulla National Park, or the Eco Park (depending on the time of year). During your game drive you'll hopefully see plenty of wildlife: elephants, monkeys, deer, buffalo, crocodiles and over 150 species of bird call the area home.

  • Head southeast today to the beautiful, quieter park of Gal Oya. Check into your lodge bungalow before enjoying your surroundings at leisure.

  • Take to the waters with a local naturalist today on a boat safari. Soak in the scenery and, if you're lucky, see elephants swimming between islands. The rest of the day is at your leisure. Learn about the lodge's animal monitoring programme or join a naturalist-led night walk.

  • If you're feeling active, trek to the top of Monkey Mountain this morning. Later, explore part of the park on a jungle drive (and optional walk). In addition to seeing wildlife, including amphibians and reptiles, learn about the local medicinal plants and endemic birdlife.

  • Your chauffeur-guide will take you further south today, to Yala National Park. Probably Sri Lanka's best-known (and busiest) park, it has the highest density of leopards in Asia.

  • Spot leopards and a multitude of other wildlife in Yala on a game drive this morning. The rest of the day is at your leisure. Relax, walk on the beach or go bird-spotting with the hotel's naturalist.

  • Ahangama on the southwest coast is today's destination. It's a fairly long day but you can travel there via Uda Walawe. Enjoy a game drive and visit the Elephant Transit Centre where unwell and orphaned elephants can receive temporary help and food if they need it.

  • Visit Hiyare Bird Sanctuary today, a pocket of tropical rainforest, home to an abundance of birdlife, flora and fauna, with a large lake. The rest of the day is yours to relax at your beachfront hotel.

  • Today (or another day during your stay in Ahangama, depending on the weather), head out on a boat to try and spot whales and dolphins in the coastal waters around the southwest of the island.

  • Your final day in Sri Lanka is yours to relax. Soak up the sunshine and the sea from your hotel on the beach. Perhaps take a tuk-tuk to nearby Galle Fort for a spot of shopping or a walk on the rampart walls.

  • Your chauffeur-guide will drive you north to the airport today, in plenty of time for your flight. Your return flight will arrive the same day.
