Warm and comfortable, Lynnfield Hotel combines personal service with traditional elegance and thoughtful nods to Orkney.
Perched atop high ground on the southern edge of Kirkwall, this small hotel is tucked away but connected. Just a short drive from the old Norse capital , it sits in a quiet location at the end of a long driveway, overlooking the town, bay, and north Orkney isles beyond.
Filled with books, paintings, and an eclectic array of period furniture, this family-run property feels like a comfortably grand home. Rooms and suites vary in size and design, some larger and traditionally furnished with sitting rooms, antique four-posters, and armoires, others with more contemporary design.
All come with modern bathrooms, scenic views of the countryside, gardens, or town, and splashes of Orcadian styling , from shades of the Highlands landscape on the walls to curtains made of Orkney tweed.
The decor in the bar and lounge is homey — weathered sofas, dark-wood wall panels, and a peat fire — and also taps local heritage. There are Orkney chairs, paintings of landmarks, stacks of local history books, and glass cabinets displaying whiskies from the distillery just around the corner.
In the restaurant too, regional produce reigns supreme, and evenings bring feasts of seasonal dishes featuring local ingredients, from seaweed-fed lamb to a daily catch fresh from Orkney shores. You’ll also find one of the most extensive wine lists in Orkney and a menu of more than 400 malt whiskies.
We like its location as a great base to explore historic Kirkwall, and we love its warm atmosphere, traditional decor, and local produce — from the tweed curtains to the seaweed-fed lamb and extensive malt whisky menu.

Rooms
Spacious and comfortable, rooms and suites here vary in size and decor. All boast modern bathrooms with heated floors, some also featuring Jacuzzi tubs.
Suites are larger in the main building, and many come with sitting areas and traditional styling. There are antique beds — some four-poster, others carved intricately out of wood — polished armoires, and hues of the Highlands setting, with shades of bracken, heather, and soft green.
Newer rooms feature more contemporary styling with bespoke carpentry and touches of Scottish heritage, such as tweed-patterned fabrics.
Room views vary too — some look over the garden, or the Highland Park and hills of Orphir, while others point towards the town of Kirkwall and beyond.
Location
For many, all roads lead to Orkney’s largest town, Kirkwall, but the attraction of this boutique hotel is the quieter location overlooking the bay, in a peaceful spot at the end of a long driveway just a short drive from the island’s Norse capital.
The property is within strolling distance of the marina, and right around the corner from the Highland Park Distillery. Orkney’s second town, Stromness, and the UNESCO-listed Neolithic settlement of Skara Brae are a 30-minute drive away.
