Canterbury Cathedral Lodge

Canterbury Cathedral Lodge

Canterbury, The UK

Situated within the gated grounds of Canterbury Cathedral, Canterbury Cathedral Lodge has an enviable location. Once the gates to the precinct close, only guests of the Lodge may enter and explore the grounds, lending an exclusive feel to the property which sits in the shade of the vast cathedral.

The hotel itself is a fairly simple, modern property, which welcomes leisure guests as well as church groups and conferences. Each of the 35 rooms is identical and decorated in a muted, contemporary style. Windows offer garden or cathedral views and all rooms have an en suite bathroom.

Breakfast is served in the Refectory Restaurant, a light and open space with exposed brick walls and wooden floors. Guests can also relax in the leafy Campanile Garden, directly in front of the cathedral, or in the comfortable Library Lounge.

OUR OPINION:

Although this is a fairly simple property, its sought-after location makes it truly unique: we loved sitting in the garden gazing at the beautiful cathedral.

Rooms

The Lodge has 35 bedrooms, the majority of which are situated in the main building. These are all of the same standard, with simple, contemporary decor and a view looking across the garden or toward the cathedral. All rooms have an en suite bathroom with a shower, and come equipped with tea and coffee making facilities, LCD TV and complimentary Wi-Fi. Rooms aren’t large but have enough space for luggage and seating in the window area.

Location

Canterbury Cathedral Lodge is situated in the heart of the city, within the cathedral precinct. Access is through a medieval gate, at which you either have to pay, or present a pass given to you by the hotel. When these gates close at night, only hotel guests are allowed to enter the cathedral grounds.

Food and drink

An open, airy space looking onto an inner courtyard, the Refectory Restaurant has wooden floors and furniture, a high ceiling and exposed brick walls. A continental buffet breakfast with hot items made to order is served here. Lunch and dinner are not served but there is a good choice of restaurants and cafés just a few minutes’ walk from the hotel.
