In 2016 I made the decision to pack my suitcase and move to Malaysia for a year, having never travelled to Asia. I was thrown into a world of culture which I had never experienced before because since growing up I had only travelled to Europe on various family holidays. Kuala Lumpur quickly became my home as I embarked on my journey falling in love with Southeast Asia.
I was able to travel to various countries in the region and experience all corners of what it has to offer — from the hustle and bustle of Bangkok, to the idyllic beaches of Langkawi, the best sushi I’ve ever eaten in Japan, and rich history of Hanoi to name only a few.
Since returning to the UK, I can say with confidence that I reminisce about Southeast Asia every single day. As a country specialist for Thailand and Malaysia, I hope to inspire others to share this feeling with the same enthusiasm.

Q&A with Bethany
What’s the best local dish you’ve tasted?
A serving of roti canai paired with an iced teh tarik, best eaten at a local mamak. It may be very basic choice for the Malaysian locals, but you simply cannot go wrong with this. Golden flaky flatbread served with three curry sauces and which is eaten at any time of the day. Along with teh tarik — traditional pulled tea which is poured between two containers at a height to create a frothy and smooth drink. On top of that, it'll only cost £1.
What's the one thing you always pack?
A spare pair of shoes. The weather in Malaysia and Thailand can be unpredictable, even in dry season. A sudden torrential downpour, which may only last ten minutes, will have your shoes soaked through. Paired with the humidity makes drying difficult, so make sure they aren’t your favorites.
Where would you love to travel next?
The Ha Giang Loop. A multi-day motorcycle trip through the mountainous landscape of northern Vietnam. Though I spent some time in Vietnam, I regrettably didn't have time for this trip. Stunning scenery, untouched landscapes and being at one with nature, a contrast from the buzz and hectic nature of Hanoi. I just need to brush up on my motorbike riding skills first.
