Inside, you’ll find a wealth of classic interiors that pay homage to the building’s history. There are 104 rooms, all with minimalist and contemporary decor, parquet flooring, and dark wood fixtures and fittings. Modern amenities include a flat-screen TV, complimentary Wi-Fi, tea and coffee-making facilities, minibar, iron and ironing board, and en suite bathroom with walk-in shower or bathtub.

Elsewhere, the Mulaberg Bistro & Bar is one of the finest spots in the city for its varied lunch and dinner menus that pull focus on French, Italian, and Danish cuisine with Icelandic influences. There’s also a relaxed bar for an extensive selection of wine, beer, spirits, and cocktails. While there’s no on-site spa, you may use one nearby at a discounted rate.

OUR OPINION:

Ticking the boxes for a relaxed stay in Iceland’s north, Hótel Kea stands out with a superb city location as well as a wonderful on-site bistro and bar. Please note that this hotel is popular with group tours.

Rooms

Available in varying categories, the 104 light-filled and airy rooms all have minimalist and contemporary decor, parquet flooring, and dark wood fixtures and fittings. Modern amenities include a flat-screen TV, complimentary Wi-Fi, tea and coffee-making facilities, minibar, iron and ironing board, and en suite bathroom with walk-in shower or bathtub. 

The larger Superior and Deluxe rooms on the higher floors and the top floor Suite offer more living space as well as views over Akureyri, the marina, the Eyjafjörður fjord, and the mountains beyond.

 

Location

You’ll be staying in the heart of Akureyri, known as the Capital of the North. Attractions within easy walking distance including an outdoor public swimming pool, an art museum, and a marina from which the whale watching tours depart. There are also some excellent restaurants nearby, including Rub 23 that serves seafood and meat dishes and is located opposite the hotel.

Food and drink

The hotel’s restaurant, Mulaberg Bistro & Bar, offers French, Italian, and Danish cuisine with Icelandic influences for lunch and dinner. Breakfast is served buffet style and includes a selection of hot and cold dishes. The elegant bar is an ideal spot for wine, beer, spirits, and cocktails.

The hotel has a 24-hour reception desk as well as a concierge team who can arrange sightseeing tours and advise on nearby attractions. Laundry and dry cleaning services are available for an additional charge. While there is no on-site spa, you may use once nearby at a discounted rate.
